A shelter, often referred to as a windbreak or weather shelter, plays a crucial role in protecting outdoor livestock from harsh weather conditions. The origin of the term ‘shelter’ lies in its basic function as described in animal welfare regulations. These regulations require that the shelter should provide animals with protection from weather and wind, as well as a dry, clean place to rest. A typical shelter consists of a simple structure with three walls and a roof, providing animals with a weather-protected area with a dry and clean surface.

For cattle and sheep, considered outdoor livestock – that is, those that spend more than 12 hours per day out in pastures or paddocks during the cold season – access to a shelter is crucial. ‘The cold season’ refers to the period of the year when there is no pasture growth.
